[BrooklynFreeCycle] File - Disclaimer (Safety Notice)

Disclaimer (Safety Notice)

This Disclaimer, or safety notice, is a REQUIREMENT for your files. Send it to your members when they join the group and periodically (monthly or every two weeks) after as a reminder.

"FREECYCLE™ NETWORK MEMBERS USE THE LIST AT THEIR OWN RISK. Please take reasonable measures to protect your safety and privacy when posting to the list or participating in an exchange. By joining the list, you agree to hold neither the list owners, moderators nor anyone affiliated with Freecycle.org responsible or liable for any circumstance resulting from a Freecycle-related exchange or communication.

SAFETY. Be aware! It is up to each individual member of Freecycle when arranging for pickup of the item being given away to be appropriately aware of the potential risk of having "a stranger" come to your home to pick something up. Freecycle as an organization assumes no responsibility for this risk. If you, for example, are a single woman living alone, you may want to say that you'll leave the item on the front porch while you are not home or arrange for a drop-off downtown, etc."

[BrooklynFreeCycle] File - Curbside Posts with General Reminder

Curbside Posts with General Reminder

Ladies and gentlemen, please DO NOT post any additional "come and get it" or "spotted" items to Brooklyn Freecycle(TM). We understand that you hate to see an item on the curb that may end up in the trash. Consider taking a Freecycle flyer to the owner of the item and letting them list it. We also understand that if it's yours, you want the items gone ASAP - we really do. If you are that desperate to have them gone, please gift to your closest local charity. But if you can spare the few extra minutes that you are expecting others to spare by driving over, please list your items and gift them to ONE person at a time so that the person driving to your house knows that they are not making a trip for nothing.

While we are on the topic, a few additional reminders:

* Don't post your home address or phone number to the list. Many reasons apply and they are all listed in the etiquette file. Exchange only with the person you are gifting to.

* If you are gifted an item, PLEASE be ready to come and pick it up within a few hours! Understand that most people DO want the items gone ASAP, so they don't want to hold them until next week. Of course, some negotiation is okay here - if you can't get there for a day or two, let the offerer know so that they can either choose to hold it or to give it to someone who can pick up sooner. Just be considerate - you were given the item . . . go get it! <grin>

* If you promise something to someone, expect that they are coming to get it and don't give it to someone else (without notifying the person and knowing that they received the notification!) We've had a few cases of someone being notified that they can have something, then getting there to find out that it was picked up a few minutes ago by someone who could get there sooner or given to someone who had come for something else. Not okay!

I guess the bottom line is to be considerate and use common sense, and with the "come and get it - it's on the porch" or "spotted" issue, the bottom line is to just don't do it! We'll have to moderate and warn those people who do.

Thank you so much for making Brooklyn Freecycle the wonderful and caring community that it has become - each of your generosity touches the life of another in some small way - and it's contagious. You're all just awesome!

[BrooklynFreeCycle] File - Safety First

Caution:

For you own safety please have someone with you when you go to a
person house to pick up a offered item and the person given the item
shouldn't be alone when someone is coming to pick up an item.

No one should go alone and no one should be alone, Safety First. Guys

Thank You

P.S: It is also good to inform someone (Good Friend or Relative) where you are going or who you are meeting to receive or give a item to.

[BrooklynFreeCycle] File - Curbing Curbside Posting Not Allowed

Thanks for participating in our Freecycle(TM) group.

This is just to let you know that we enforce the guideline that "spotted at the curb or in an alley", and "first-come first-served" (or similar posts) will be deleted.

If you are an unmoderated member, and you post these, you risk being put back on moderation. If you would like to offer an item you spotted to Freecycle members, then go and get the item off of the curb yourself and then post it as an OFFER. We STRONGLY suggest speaking to the previous owner though, as there may be safety concerns that you may not know about (e.g. a child's car seat could have been in an accident, rendering it unsafe even if there is no visible damage, the item could be soiled by pets, etc.).

If it is your property, and it needs to go NOW, then haul it out to your curb, and put a sign on it that says TAKE ME, I'M FREE on it. It will be gone quickly, and if it's not worth picking up, the trash truck will haul it away for you.

"Spotteds" and "First-come" offers do not reflect the grassroots movement that The Freecycle Network stands for. By posting items in this manner, it is likely several people will go try to claim the item(s) (many arriving when all the "stuff" is gone). Not only does this add harmful emissions into our air and contribute to traffic congestion, there have been reports of people fighting over such items when they arrive at the same time.

In one New Jersey town, the police were called when Freecycle members descended to pick up items on the sidewalk outside a warehouse. The site was being cleaned and were placed outside temporarily. Some well-meaning person spotted them and posted to the local Freecycle group. Items were taken before the police arrived. Additionally, sometimes people are evicted from their residence and everything they own is thrown out on the curb. Before they can come back with any sort of vehicle to collect them, people have picked through their clothing, furniture, and keepsakes. Not a pretty scene!

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

[BrooklynFreeCycle] File - OUR FREE CYCLE ETIQUETTE.txt

Dear Brooklyn Free Cycle Member,

Thanks for being a part of The (ever-expanding) Freecycle Network. We're changing the world one gift at a time! This message is sent to all subscribers upon joining, and periodically thereafter to the entire list.

If you're new to the group or want a quick refresher on making the most of our Free Cycle group, please read on!

This Free Cycle group matches people who have things they need to get rid of with people who can use them. Our goal is to keep usable items out of the landfill. By using what we already have on this earth, we reduce consumerism, manufacture fewer goods, and lessen the impact on the earth. Another benefit of using Freecycle is that it encourages us to get rid of junk that we no longer need and promote community involvement in the process. Free your inner pack rat!

Brooklyn Free Cycle is part of the incredibly fast-growing international Free Cycle movement, which began in Tucson, AZ on May 1st, 2003 and now boasts thousands of groups all over the world. Please help this group grow by spreading the word! We all personally know lots of great people in our community who would love this idea. So, why not "pay it forward" and tell 3 (or more) people how wonderful Freecycle is! You tell your friends, your family, your neighbors, your co-workers... and they tell theirs, and so on, and so on... well, you get the idea!

USING THE FREE CYCLE LIST

For more information on Freecycle in general and a list of other approved Free Cycle groups, visit http://www.freecycle.org/ (Highly recommended!)

The following list rules have been adapted from the original Freecycle etiquette sheet. A certain structure helps the group run smoothly and effectively for everyone's benefit. Remember, the success of this group depends on all of us, and that means each of us need to do our best to keep on task and, well, be nice and patient. Good Luck, Have Fun & Thank You for keeping Good Stuff out of the Landfills!

(Remove this line--> While there will be slight variations from group to group, those rules in bold (in *this* section only of course) are required of all groups <-- Remove this line)

1) KEEP IT FREE, LEGAL & APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AGES. This means, for example, no pornography, alcohol, tobacco, drugs (of any kind, including all medicines, vitamins, creams, etc.), firearms or other weapons. Two strikes and you're out of the group. This is our main Freecycle rule to live by and it's a pretty easy one at that.

2) SUBJECT LINE OF YOUR POSTS. Use these phrases to make it easy for others to delete or view. (There may be slight variations on these from group to group as well).

OFFER: Thingamajig (Your General Location)
TAKEN: Thingamajig
WANTED: Thingamajig, any condition. (Your General Location - please use this sparingly and don't offer money. And above all else, don't ask for an extravagant item like a diamond ring which we'd all like to have or the strike rule will kick in - see no. 1 above.)
RECEIVED: Thingamajig
ADMIN: new ideas, thoughts, etc. (Used by Owners and Mods, local policy dictates)

3) PLEASE DO NOT POST THE SAME "WANTED" POSTING MORE THAN ONCE A MONTH. (Here, too, there will be variations from group to group)

4) NO POLITICS, NO SPAM, NO MONEY, NO PERSONAL ATTACKS/RUDENESS, NO PROSELYTIZING/RELIGION. It's all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Two strikes & you're out, i.e. you will be unsubscribed by the moderator after two inappropriate postings.

5) YOUR APPROXIMATE LOCATION: Try to list this in the body of your e-mail as well as in the subject line. OFFER Couch (downtown). "I've got a couch and live downtown. Nearest intersection: Speedway and Stone."

6) KEEP IT ALL IN ONE E-MAIL. Got more than one thing to give away? Keep it all in one e-mail please and just number the items for your own clarity. This reduces the overall number of emails we all have to receive. Some groups don't do this rule.

7) CAN WE USE FREE CYCLE GROUPS TO FIND NEW HOMES FOR PETS? Some groups say yes, but keep it legal & be lovingly careful. Other groups say no, please refer to Petfinder (www.petfinder.com) to find a pet locally. It depends on what you and your fellow members have decided on locally. However, posts about pets for breeding purposes are not allowed in Freecycle groups.

8) NO TRADING PLEASE. Go to your local trading organization for this. It can be quite fun. With Freecycle, though, there are no strings attached, just give it away now…

9) RESPONSES GO ONLY TO OFFERER. It keeps down the sheer no. of emails.

10) PICK UP. Arrange as you like. Generally, you'll wait until you get a handful of responses or maybe overnight, and then you can pick whomever you like! That's half the fun. I always ask that people consider giving your starving local charity preference if one should respond. Arrange pickup with one person only, rather than "it's on the porch, whoever gets here first gets it." Otherwise you'll become the boo man pretty fast with your fellow Freecycle group members... Also: only give your phone number to one person at a time or ask for the recipient's phone no. Otherwise you'll get swamped with phone calls.

SAFETY. Be aware! It is up to each individual member of Free Cycle when arranging for pickup of the item being given away to be appropriately aware of the potential risk of having "a stranger" come to your home to pick something up. Freecycle as a organization assumes no responsibility for this risk. You may want to arrange to meet in a public place or leave the item on the front porch without mentioning whether or not you will be home at the time of pickup.

11) NO OFFERING YOURSELF OR YOUR CHILDREN. Posting oneself (or one's shy friends) is, I'm afraid, not allowed. There are many fine Internet dating sites better suited to this purpose, or you could try Craig's List or a Burning Man mixer (just kidding). Posting your kids is not on the menu either, no matter how crazy they make you sometimes. Try getting them involved in after-school band practice.

12) A BRIEF NOTE ON FREE CYCLE ETIQUETTE: "Be nice." We are all volunteers and we've got a great little community here so when you arrange to pick up an item from another Free cycle member, it is basic good manners to accommodate them as much as possible in terms of scheduling, and then be punctual; they are, after all, giving you something you need and asking nothing in return except that you will show up when you say you will. (Leaving someone hanging is never a nice thing.) Also, unless the giver tells you otherwise, assume that they would like you to come by as soon as you can to take away the item; no more than three days after the offer is made is usual. (Think of it as The Three-day Rule.)

That should just about do it. Have Fun and Thank you for being a part of The Free Cycle group

Regards,
Your Brooklyn Free Cycle Moderators
