Have a 2009 iMac where the computer component is FINE but the video flickers significantly. It is updated with OS X Mavericks. I took it to TekServe and they said since it's 5 years old finding the replacement components will be expensive ~ 700 with no longstanding guarantee.
So for the tinkerer or person looking to use the computer to power an external video, have at it.
