Hope chest to give away to anyone who wants to use its wood it for some kind of woodworking. It's a beautiful Lane Chest with some kind of hardwood on the outside--large pieces of really lovely grained wood. The inside is cedar.
We had it in our house, and I just learned that earlier versions of this chest were recalled because they were self-locking and children climbed inside and suffocated because the chest is airtight. To be clear, this chest was not recalled because it does not have the self-locking mechanism. I could resell it, but I am not OK doing that. There's no way a child could open this heavy lid if they somehow got inside.
But it's beautiful and I can't bear to just junk it. Giving this away to someone who will take it apart and use the wood felt like the right thing to do.
Pickup in Park Slope near 9th St library. 2 person job to carry it down stairs.
